Chelston cops sued for confiscating groceries

POLICE officers at Chelston Police Station in Lusaka have been sued for allegedly illegally confiscating over K150,000 and an assortment of groceries from God is Able Grocery owners. The officers are also accused of ransacking the shop and drinking some beverages while conducting investigations over a stolen phone. Phillis Sichinga, owner of the shop, has gone to the Lusaka High Court seeking a declaration that the police misconducted themselves by confiscating K152,700 and other items. Ms Sichinga also seeks damages for loss of business, use and value for the money and further compensation for mental anguish and stress suffered…

Civil servants to declare assets

ANTI CORRUPTION Commission (ACC) is formulating a law that will compel all government employees to declare their assets to help eliminate graft. Commission director general Tom Shamakamba says civil servants should ‘prepare’ for the policy as “it is now recognised by the United Nations (UN) that a country that doesn’t have an asset declaration regime is not doing enough to combat corruption”. Mr Shamakamba said although the policy might not be welcomed, government workers should be ready to declare their assets.

Veep formally acts

GOVERNMENT says Vice-President Mutale Nalumango is always formally written to, acknowledging her acting role whenever President Hakainde Hichilema is out of the country. Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa says formalities for Mrs Nalumango to perform the duties of acting President in the absence of President Hichilema are always adhered to in accordance with the law. Mr Kangwa made the clarification following a video on social media alleging that Mrs Nalumango is suffering and has been neglected to an extent that she is not formally written to, acknowledging her acting position when President Hichilema is out of the country. Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa described the remarks in the video as malicious. Man nabbed over exam malpractice

A 28-YEAR-OLD former student of Northern Technical College (Nortec) in Ndola has been arrested for allegedly writing an examination for a student at the same institution.Copperbelt police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba says the incident happened on Tuesday around 14:00 hours at Nortec. The suspect has been identified as Happy Lupiya, 28, of Minsundu Township, Ndola, while the student is Blessings Katuta. Mr Mweemba said the matter was reported by David Lombe, 35, a specialist assessment and certification officer, on behalf of Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority Zambia (TEVETA). Cholera breaks out in Chilanga

District health promotions officer Godfrey Zulu told ZANIS that currently, four patients aged between 11 and 24 are admitted to health centres – one in Midwest Namalombwe and three at Tubalange mini-hospital in Kasupe. Mr Zulu said affected areas include Chilanga, Namalombwe and Mondengwa wards. “Water has been discovered to be contaminated in Kazimva in Namalombwe Ward and water tests are being done in all the wards within Chilanga to help control the situation,” he explained. Mr Zulu said sensitisation programmes on the waterborne disease have since started in Mt Makulu and will be conducted in the rest of the wards. He encouraged residents to observe and abide by laid-down primary healthcare guidelines such as washing hands after using the toilet, boiling drinking water or adding chlorine, among others.
